So a little bit of a recovery from the disaster of Week 1. I went 3-3 and you can see why I like the money line.
Full disclosure, I didn’t watch many games this week because I was celebrating my 1st Wedding Anniversary with my beautiful wife. I think it’s a valid excuse. But it is the danger that all of us will endure when having a Fall wedding. Fortunately, the next time my anniversary falls on a Sunday is in 2020, then 2026, and then not again until 2037! Wait, we didn’t consider Monday Night Football! Well, my anniversary falls on a Monday night for the first time in 2021, so I’m hoping that’s just a poorly scheduled game.
Enough about the woman who is more important to me than football. Let’s get into where I got things right, and where I got things wrong. I will try to be as insightful as the replays allow me.
Now let’s talk about some honesty.
Nailed it
Jamaal Charles IS the Chiefs offense. Unfortunately, he was also the Broncos defense, but we’re talking about where I nailed it. Andy Reid had one play call all game – “Give the ball to Jamaal.” The Chiefs should replace Alex Smith with a 300 pound lineman and run the Wildcat every play with Charles taking the snap. Alex Smith is just the hands that catch the snap to hand it to Jamaal anyway.
DeAngelo Williams was playing with a chip on his shoulder. He knows he’s dropping to the #2 spot next week when Le’Veon Bell returns. But he played to prove that he can be the featured back, or at least play in the red zone to get some scores. And the Steelers kept the running game in check with only 60 yards from the San Fransisco 49ers running backs, unfortunately not helped by Carlos Hyde having the leave the game due to injury. The bright spot of the Niners running game was Colin Kaepernick scrambling 9 times for 51 yards. Both those are details. It was an easy win for the Steelers. I’m still a buyer on the Steelers, and a seller on the Niners.
Matt Ryan to Julio Jones wins games. The Eli Manning to Odell Beckham, Jr. is amazing, but that’s because of Odell Beckham, Jr. Eli still managed to turn the ball over on a fumble at a critical point in the fourth quarter. But that’s partly because of Eli, and partly because of Atlanta’s new head coach, Dan Quinn. Beckham makes Eli look good, and Eli still doesn’t look good. I’m a Falcons buyer and Giants seller.
I don’t think I could have nailed a game better than the Dallas Cowboys at Philadelphia Eagles. Ugly game – check. Eagles injuring Romo – check (though I thought it would be a rib, and not a collarbone). DeMarco Murray kept in check – check. Cowboys defense getting to Sam Bradford – check. Unfortunately for the Cowboys, they lost Romo for about 8 weeks. Add that to losing Dez Bryant to a broken foot in Week 1, and Jason Garrett has to come up with some new game plans. Fortunately, Brandon Weeden played well. And considering he is currently being judged by his tenure as a starter for the Cleveland Browns, he is going to prove to be better than most people think. I think there might be some good value in the Cowboys going forward. And bettors like the Eagles, so I’m happy to take the other side of that action.
Almost Nailed it
So Peyton Manning had a game tying drive. Thanks to a Chiefs fumble on the ensuing kick-off that Bradley Roby returned for the game winning touchdown, which shows up in as another game-winning drive in the stat column for Peyton Manning. I think the win goes to the Broncos defense, and Peyton Manning did well enough to keep the Broncos in the game. In Week 1, a pick-6 by Aquib Talib gave the Broncos the win, but I said that wouldn’t happen every week. I was kind of wrong, because it was a Jamaal Charles fumble caused by Brandon Marshall that was run back by Bradley Roby that gave the Broncos the win. THAT won’t happen every week, I promise! Based on the news about Manning now shutting up critics, the Broncos will be extremely overvalued going forward, so readers will probably see me taking the other side of the Broncos for the next few weeks.
Marcus Mariota versus Johnny Manziel. Statistically, the Tennessee Titans won the game. The Win-Loss column tells a different story. Manziel showed signs of Johnny Football when it counted. But the three turnovers of the Titans were costly enough to cost them the game. Regardless of the outcome, I’m still a Tennessee buyer and still a Cleveland seller.
Blew it
Alex Smith was less than a player this week, and back to being a game manager. And like I said above, his managing involves just handing the ball off to Jamaal Charles. He threw the ball just 25 times for 191 yards, no touchdowns, and 2 interceptions.
The Washington Redskins defense showed up to play against the St. Louis Rams. Washington found a running game. And Kirk Cousins played well enough. The Rams got beat. Nick Foles was the player that Philadelphia Eagles fans knew they got rid of. I blew it. But I’m still not a buyer on Washington, and I think that there might be some future value in the Rams.
