Nailed It

I feel like the entire country of the United States of America was cheated out of a perfectly good Monday night by having to watch two JV teams play.  In the entire first half, the Eagles converted zero 3rd downs.  There were four turnovers.  The punts averaged about 12 yards.  Roughing the kicker, which turned into a first down leading to a touchdown.  Even the refs screwed up the clock on the Eagles final drive of the 2nd quarter just before the half.  Ugly football by two terrible teams.  To put it another way, what would you think about the team whose quarterback threw for 280 yards, only 1 touchdown, 3 interceptions, and a 61.3 QBR?  Well, they beat a team whose quarterback threw for 189 yards, 1 touchdown, 2 interceptions, and a 62.3 passer rating.  Any team in the National Football League would have been able to beat the Week 6 version of the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants.  The Eagles were just lucky that they got to play the Giants.

The Cincinnati Bengals are on fire, and Rex Ryan’s Buffalo Bills are still trying to find their way, even at home in Ralph Wilson Stadium.  To be fair, the only real opponent the Bengals have had this year was the Seattle Seahawks in Week 5.  And the only real opponents they have coming up are the Pittsburg Steelers twice, and the Arizona Cardinals.  So you want to talk about a team with 16-0 potential?  This might be the first season since the Ickey Shuffle that the Bengals win a playoff game.  I’m selling the Bills hard.

The Minnesota Vikings are decent.  But Jamaal Charles was the Kansas City Chiefs offense, and without him they are done.  My Lock of the Week held up.

The value was on the Carolina Panthers as an undefeated 2.5 to 1 underdog.  And the Seattle Seahawks have been giving up serious points since losing Dan Quinn as their defensive coordinator to the Atlanta Falcons, even at home at CenturyLink Field.  The Seahawks are in a downward spiral, and the Panthers are somehow winning every week.  Can the Panthers keep it up?  I don’t know, but if I’m going to continue getting that type of value, I’m going to keep on taking it.

Almost Nailed It

The New England Patriots did not blow out the Indianapolis Colts.  But the score was much closer than the game actually was.  Even though I didn’t take this game, because I don’t bet with my heart, I wrongly predicted that the Patriots would easily cover the 10 point spread.  Well, I’m going to continue not betting the Patriots, but I do think they have a legitimate chance of cover most games this season.

Blew It

“The crazy thing is we’re 1-5, but we’re not a 1-5 team”.  I know where Denard Robinson is coming from, but they lost to the Houston Texans, who I picked to be the 1-5 team before this game.  But I blew it.  Brian Hoyer showed up.  The Texans defense finally showed up and had a few interceptions, including a pick-6.  On the other side, Blake Bortles threw the ball 53 times!!  Meanwhile, the Jags only had 21 running plays, and 4 of them were Bortles making him the leading rusher with 37 yards.  Denard, there is a reason your Jags are 1-5.  I thought you were better than that.

I didn’t have much confidence in a Michael Vick led Pittsburg Steelers offense.  But who could have predicted that the Steelers third string quarterback, Landry Jones, would step in and dominate?  Carson Palmer threw for a whopping 421 yards, but 111 yards of penalties, and 2 interceptions including one in the end zone will crush a team.  The Steelers are a tough team.  I don’t know about the Cardinals anymore, but I’m a Steelers buyer.

Has Colin Kaepernick turned it around, or was the solid game he played against the Baltimore Ravens defense a fluke?  There had been a bunch of talk from people leading up to Week 6 who thought Kaepernick might be done.  But 340 yards, 2 touchdowns, and no interceptions shut them up for at least one week.  The San Francisco 49ers shouldn’t celebrate that win for too long, because beating the Ravens is no big accomplishment.  The Ravens and Niners seasons are over – their schedules are too tough, and they’re just not that good.
